Non-stop day of triathlon action in Nottingham

The City’s Victoria Embankment came to life yesterday, Thursday 7 June, seeing more than 500 participants take on the triathlon challenge at the Accenture World Triathlon Mixed Relay Nottingham.

Whether they were dipping their toes in the water for the very first time or going for gold, the event catered for all triathlon abilities, supporting British Triathlon’s bid to get more people into the sport.

The day began with some-300 local school children taking on a mini GO TRI challenge, having the opportunity to cycle across the iconic blue carpet and cross the finish line.

Come lunchtime and the stage was set for both amateur triathletes to test the route for themselves, with a choice of either tackling the sprint or GO TRI. The event featured the second instalment of the Accenture Mixed Team Challenge, seeing participants team up and take part together. With the option of either splitting the effort and taking on a discipline each as a relay trio, or completing all three disciplines each as a tribe, the sun was shining as teams were cheered home by crowds lining the embankment.

Swimming’s double Olympic Gold Medallist and local hero, Rebecca Adlington was one of the many making their triathlon debut in the River Trent on Thursday. Heading up the National Lottery Relay Team, she was joined by two excited competition winners who together competed as a relay team.

Rebecca said: “It's been great taking on my first triathlon event with a team. Having the support as you swim and cheering on the team as they bike and run, really made the event special."

Race results segmented into relay, tribe, sprint and GO TRI are being finalised over the coming week. To view finish times, please visit here.
